Auto Defects: Brake Failure, Cruise Control Failure
Few parts of a car are more important than working brakes. Yet some anti-lock brakes have serious design flaws that endanger many lives. Sometimes anti-lock brakes act to prevent a vehicle from slowing down when the car needs to do so. Sometimes they malfunction and brake when they shouldn't. Tragic consequences can result.
Anti-lock brakes are complex, and can fail in many ways. When it detects a skid, a computer fires the brakes in short, rapid bursts. Alternating with these bursts are split seconds of time in which the brake is turned off; when functioning, this system acts much the same way as when a driver "pumps the brakes," except much more quickly and with more variation in the level of braking. However, when the computer malfunctions, as a result of substandard workmanship, a driver can press the brake and the computer can refuse to allow the brake to function at all.
Similarly, a computer malfunction can cause the cruise control to click on without warning, speeding up the car. Car companies could make both anti-lock brakes and cruise control much safer; but they don't want to incur the expense. Such justifications are hardly sufficient to an individual who has been severely injured or fatally injured as a result of anti-lock brake or cruise control malfunction.
