Occupant Ejection

Auto Defects Causing Occupant Ejection

In motor vehicle accidents, occupant ejection is an all-too-common occurrence. The chances of a serious injury and death rise dramatically when a person is ejected from a car. A report by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (B. Bertram, J. O'Day) studied 74 car accidents, each of which involved one person who was ejected and one person who was not. Sixteen of those ejected from the vehicles sustained fatal injuries, while there were no fatalities among 74 people in the same accidents who were not ejected.

However, auto manufacturers do not do all they can to prevent driver and passenger ejections. Some seatbelts are made such that that they release if pressured from a certain angle. Some door latches can fly open if hit a certain way. Windshield glass is often designed such that it shatters but does not allow a person to go through; but side windows often do not have this same feature and thus people can be ejected through them.
