Family gets $9M after Progress Energy found responsible in Hartsville man’s death

Darlington County, SC June 18, 2009 – A Darlington County family was awarded $9 million in early June after a jury found Progress Energy responsible for the death of a 21-year-old Hartsville man, according to Ed Bell, the attorney representing the family.

The Bell Legal Group and Saleeby and Cox represented the family of Allen Toney, who was electrocuted by a downed power line in 2003 at his home about three hours after the line fell. The $9 million represents $3.5 million in actual damages and $5.5 million in punitive damages, Bell’s press release stated.
