The Firefighter PFAS Injury Compensation Act of 2024: Bipartisan Support for Firefighters

Firefighter extinguishes a blaze with foam

Policymakers and fire industry advocates continue pushing for firefighter protection acts, safety improvements, and accountability. The Firefighter PFAS Injury Compensation Act of 2024 aims to provide compensation for firefighters’ health conditions and deaths due to toxic on-duty exposures. Bill S.4013 is spearheaded by Senator Cory Booker and co-sponsored by several Democratic and Republican legislators, and may finally bring relief to those harmed.

For decades, firefighters battled Class B fires using aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), a suppressant containing dangerous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals. Though the industry is switching to PFAS-free suppressants, these changes come too late for many. PFAS exposure lies at the heart of the AFFF lawsuit, a fight to hold the manufacturers responsible for their roles in producing and distributing toxic suppressants and failing to warn firefighters of the hazards.

What the PFAS Legislation Means for Firefighters

This proposed legislation marks a potential turning point for firefighters seeking relief and recognition for injuries and illnesses related to exposure to PFAS. If passed, the Firefighter PFAS Injury Compensation Act of 2024 could help thousands of firefighters.

The legislation will not halt the ongoing AFFF/PFAS litigation. Advocates will continue their efforts to hold the manufacturers of PFAS firefighter gear accountable, and passage of this bill will hopefully strengthen the framework of liability and recovery.
